D.B.F. Dayanand College of Arts and Science, Solapur (Maharashtra) was established on 17th June 1940 by DAV College Trust and Management Society, New Delhi in memory of the victory of Arya Samaj Movement against the Nizam of Hyderabad as a part of Marathwada Mukti Sangram. It is one of the leading educational Institutions and grant-in-aid college presently affiliated to Solapur University, Solapur. The college has been re-accredited with ‘A’ grade (CGPA 3.07) in February 2014 by the NAAC, Bangalore.
It is the only college in the area of Solapur University which has been bestowed with the honor of “College with Potential for Excellence” for consecutive second phase by UGC (2015-2020). On 1st June 2016 Solapur University, Solapur conducted “Academic and Administrative Audit” (AAA) and the college secured ‘A’ grade with 91.33% (274/300), the highest marks among 35 grantable colleges affiliated to Solapur University. The college won the Best College Award 2017 from Solapur University, Solapur. It is an ISO 9001: 2015 certified college. The college is ranked in the band 151-200 by the National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2017, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. The college has secured 35th rank in Maharashtra state in a national level survey conducted by Career 360.
The aims and objectives of the college are to provide modern and ethical education, especially to the downtrodden irrespective of caste, creed, gender, religion and languages. The college offers Arts (B.A.) and Science (B.Sc.) degree programs along with self-financing B.Sc.(Entire Computer Science), 11 post graduate courses [M.A.(4) and M.Sc.(7)] and 13 University approved certificate courses affiliated to Solapur University. The college also offers 14 college certificate courses and 11 Bridge courses. Being a University affiliated college, the faculty contributes in designing curricula through various university committees and academic bodies such as Standing committee, academic council, faculty members, BOS and syllabus framing sub-committee.
The College takes initiatives for integrated teaching-learning by inspiring teachers to go beyond academic framework and focus on the intellectual, physical, moral and ethical education of students. The teaching faculty avails `participatory teaching learning process’ for students through seminars, group discussion, study tours, unit test, mid-term exam and practical examinations. For the benefit of academically poor and advanced learners, the college runs remedial and step up courses. To make teaching and learning more effective and to update knowledge of the students, advanced ICT techniques are effectively used. Internet and INFLIBNET facilities are available to the students and the faculty. Internal Quality Assurance Cell makes an all-out efforts to enhance academic standards of the college through various events such as International, National, State, University level conferences /seminars /workshops /symposia.
The College has constituted a research committee to boost and monitor research activities. A peer-reviewed DAV International journal of Science (Biannual) is being published online and in print since 2012 with an ISSN number. Consequently, there is a quantum leap in research activities during the last five years. 12 Research Centers are approved by Solapur University and 25 teachers have been recognized as research guides. ………members of the teaching staff have so far received UGC grants for .. major and .. minor research projects. …. staff members have been awarded the Summer Research Fellowship offered by Indian Science Academy. ….. faculty members have been awarded Teacher fellowship under UGC- FIP plan. The members of the teaching faculty have published 350 Research articles/papers in referred International and National Journals and have actively participated in ….. seminars, symposia and workshops and presented …… research papers . 3 teachers have applied for an Indian patent.
The excavation carried out by the college at Kudal Sangam- buried historical site- in south Solapur taluka has opened a new window in Archaeological research. The College has installed a Consultancy Centre for farmers, civilians and industrialist to provide guidance for rain water harvesting structures, prospecting and management of ground water through dug wells or bore wells, either for agriculture, domestic or industrial purposes using scientific experimentations. The College has a placement cell, registered alumni and parents’ association and career guidance cell for various competitive examinations.
The college has established a unique History and Culture Museum as “Centre for Preservation of Heritage of Maharashtra” formed as appendages’ to the department of History and Department of Ancient Indian History Culture. The centre also promotes the activities like preservation of Modi and Brahmi – the dying scripts and Vedic Sanskrit. The college organizes a state level elocution competition, spelling and English essay writing competition, DTSCE, science quiz competition, Avishkar Research competition etc. for academic development of the students. The college organizes Yuvati Mahotsav for girl students and motivates its students to participate in the university Youth Festival. The college organizes sports carnival to foster sports spirit among students. The college conducted Inter College Handball Tournament in 2015 and Inter College Athletic Games in 2017. The college organized West Zone Inter University Handball ( Men ) Tournament in 2018 in collaboration with Solapur University, Solapur.
The college introduced Dayanand Shree Award in 2017 for outstanding student in the college and Best Teacher Award for teachers.
NCC and NSS Units of the College participate in social programs connected with AIDS awareness, blood donation, voter registration movement, secular culture, save girl child, tree plantation, anti-dowry movements etc. Mr. Aftab Shaikh, an NSS Volunteer, has been honored for being Best NSS Volunteer at the hands of President of India. Dr. V.C. Dande, won a state level Best Program Officer Award.
The college is spread over 63 acres of land with spacious academic and administrative buildings, one AC seminar Hall, well-equipped science laboratories, computer and language laboratory with internet and Wi-Fi facility, botanical and rock garden, vast sports ground with 400 meters jogging track and basketball court, Gymkhana, RO water facility, solar plant and ELD bulbs, a three-stored library having more than 1,50, 000 books and 150 periodicals and journals with e-library facility.
The college has developed a very good rapport with business communities in Solapur as a result of which there are a good number of donations received by the college.
